This 3D printed replica is printed in 1:1 full scale to give a great sense of scale for the size of Starship. Each ship is equipped with ~18,000 of these tiles to protect from the plasma that forms around the vehicle while experiencing reentry.
Tiles are given a perfect surface texture on the black side by using the standard textured plate that comes with the A1 Mini.
The tile pictured below is the prototype unit, with the main difference from the production units being the use of grey from the backside of the tile on this prototype, whereas the versions sent out have a white back material. Build quality will improve as I print & assemble more tiles as well.
Future versions are planned that will include small fragments of the real heatshield tiles mounted in the back.
